Learning to cook authentic Indian food can be very intimidating, especially without a good masala recipe. These dishes have vastly different flavors from the southern comfort food I grew up with. But, luckily for us, my mother-in-law is one of South Africa’s best Indian cooks and she has taught us well! This mixed masala recipe is so easy to make and will take your cooking to the next level!
South African Indians have a unique cuisine – a blend of traditional Indian recipes with their own South African flair. This mix is something that we always keep stocked at home since we use this versatile masala for everything from curries to braai (BBQ) meat.
This mix is more for flavor than for spiciness. I like to start with this masala to build flavor and then add cayenne chili powder for heat as needed for each dish. The Kashmiri chili powder I use is super mild but has a beautiful color and great flavor.
